1. Not a Therapist, Counselor, or Medical Professional
Noema Cognition is not a licensed therapist, psychologist, counselor, psychiatrist, or any other mental health or medical professional. Noema is a structured self-examination platform that uses artificial intelligence to help users identify patterns in their own written reflections.
Nothing on Noema Cognition — including AI-generated reflections, pattern analyses, weekly syntheses, therapeutic modality suggestions, or any other content — constitutes or is intended to constitute:
- Mental health therapy, counseling, or treatment
- Psychological diagnosis or assessment
- Medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment
- A prescription or recommendation for any therapeutic intervention
- A substitute for professional mental health care
If you are struggling with mental health issues, please consult a licensed mental health professional. Noema is not equipped to address clinical conditions, trauma, psychiatric emergencies, or complex mental health needs.
2. No Therapeutic Relationship
Using Noema Cognition does not create a therapeutic, physician-patient, or counselor-client relationship of any kind between you and Noema Cognition, its founders, employees, or the artificial intelligence systems it employs.
No information you submit to Noema — including journal entries, voice recordings, mood data, or responses to prompts — is reviewed by a licensed mental health professional. All analysis is performed by automated AI systems.
The absence of a therapeutic relationship means that confidentiality protections that apply in professional clinical settings (such as HIPAA-covered treatment) do not apply here. Please review our Privacy Policy to understand how your data is handled.
3. AI Limitations & Accuracy
All reflections, pattern analyses, weekly syntheses, and content suggestions on Noema Cognition are generated by artificial intelligence — specifically large language models (LLMs) operated via the OpenAI API.
You should be aware of the following limitations of AI-generated content on this platform:
- AI does not understand you. AI systems process patterns in text. They do not have awareness, empathy, clinical judgment, or genuine understanding of your emotional state, history, or context.
- AI outputs may be inaccurate. AI-generated reflections and pattern analyses may be wrong, incomplete, inconsistent, or contextually inappropriate. Outputs are probabilistic, not deterministic.
- AI may produce biased or harmful content. Like all AI systems, the models used by Noema can produce outputs that reflect biases in their training data. Outputs are filtered but not guaranteed to be free of bias or inappropriate content.
- AI cannot diagnose conditions. No AI output on Noema should be interpreted as a diagnosis of any mental health condition, personality type, neurological pattern, or medical state.
- AI can hallucinate. AI models can generate confident-sounding statements that are factually incorrect. Do not rely on AI-generated content as authoritative.
Noema makes no warranty, express or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of AI-generated content for any purpose.
4. Therapeutic Modality Suggestions Are Correlational, Not Diagnostic
Noema Cognition identifies recurring patterns in your journal entries and, where relevant, surfaces information about therapeutic frameworks and modalities — such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or contemplative practices — that have historically addressed similar patterns.
These suggestions are informational and correlational only. They are based on surface-level pattern matching in text, not clinical assessment. They are not:
- A recommendation that you pursue a specific therapeutic modality
- A diagnosis that you have a condition addressed by that modality
- Medical or clinical advice of any kind
- A substitute for evaluation by a licensed professional who can assess your actual clinical needs
Noema surfaces these frameworks as educational information. What you do with that information is entirely your responsibility. If you are considering engaging with any therapeutic modality or professional, please consult a licensed mental health professional who can conduct a proper clinical assessment.
5. Not FDA-Approved or Regulated as a Medical Device
Noema Cognition is a journaling and self-reflection platform. It has not been reviewed, cleared, or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is not regulated as a medical device, digital therapeutic, or Software as a Medical Device (SaMD).
Noema does not make any claims of therapeutic efficacy, clinical outcomes, or medical benefit. Any perceived improvement in wellbeing, clarity, or self-awareness from using Noema is the result of the user's own reflective practice — not a product of FDA-regulated treatment.
6. Self-Reflection May Surface Difficult Emotions
Structured self-examination — the core practice Noema facilitates — can bring unconscious patterns, unresolved experiences, and difficult emotions into conscious awareness. This is an inherent aspect of genuine self-inquiry, not a malfunction.
Noema is not designed for people who are in acute psychological distress, actively experiencing a mental health crisis, or who have unprocessed trauma that requires clinical support. If you are in any of these situations, please seek support from a licensed professional before using this platform.
By using Noema, you acknowledge that self-reflective practice may cause discomfort and that this discomfort is informational, not treatment. Noema is not responsible for emotional responses arising from your use of the platform.
7. Assumption of Risk
By using Noema Cognition, you acknowledge and agree that:
- You use the service entirely at your own risk
- You assume full responsibility for any decisions made based on AI-generated content
- Noema Cognition is not liable for any harm — psychological, emotional, or otherwise — arising from your use of the platform
- You will not rely on Noema as a substitute for professional mental health care, medical advice, or crisis intervention
- You understand the AI limitations described in this disclaimer and accept that AI-generated content may be inaccurate
Please review the full Terms of Service, including the Limitation of Liability section, for the complete scope of Noema's legal disclaimers.

9. FTC AI Transparency Disclosure
In compliance with FTC Act Section 5 and current AI enforcement guidance (2023–2026), Noema Cognition makes the following clear and conspicuous disclosures:
- AI-generated content: All reflections, pattern analyses, weekly synthesis reports, and therapeutic modality suggestions displayed in your Noema journal are produced by artificial intelligence. They are not written by a human.
- No human review: Your journal entries are processed by automated AI systems. No human reviews your entries or the AI responses they generate.
- AI outputs may be inaccurate: AI-generated content may contain errors, omissions, or statements that are inappropriate for your specific situation. Noema makes no guarantee of accuracy.
- No understanding: AI does not "understand" your mental state. It identifies statistical patterns in text. The appearance of insight or empathy in AI-generated responses is a function of language modeling, not genuine comprehension.
- No therapeutic claims: Noema Cognition makes no claims — express or implied — of therapeutic efficacy, clinical benefit, or measurable improvement in mental health outcomes.
- Third-party AI: AI features are powered by OpenAI's API (GPT models and Whisper). Your data is subject to OpenAI's data handling practices as described in our Privacy Policy.

We do not store Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by HIPAA, and HIPAA's privacy and security rules do not apply to Noema Cognition or to the information you provide through our platform.

Noema Cognition uses this term in its generic, descriptive sense to reflect the product's focus on structured self-examination, cognitive pattern recognition, and the contents of conscious experience.

All third-party trademarks, service marks, and trade names referenced on this site or in this product — including but not limited to "Noema Magazine" and "Berggruen Institute" — are the property of their respective owners. Their mention is solely for the purpose of clarifying non-affiliation.
No confusion is intended. If you arrived here believing Noema Cognition was affiliated with another Noema-branded entity, we want to be explicitly clear: it is not.
